Users may use the site’s search feature to find music by artist, song or even genre. The sheet music or tabs are then delivered via a web page on the site, through downloadable content, on CD/DVD or mailed as a book. Some sites may focus on music for a specific instrument, such as guitar, while others may offer content for a wide variety of instruments. Additional features for these sites may include instrument lessons, musician resources, and wish lists. Issues regarding the publishing rights of free tablature sites were raised by the music industry, as original songwriters were not receiving royalties from the ad revenue generated from “free tab” sites. In 2005 distributing free tablature of copyrighted music using the Internet was considered illegal by the music industry. Although most sites charge for their products and give royalties back to music publishers, some still operate utilizing user-contributed content and claim to have servers outside of legal boundaries.
